GETTING TO FIJI
Fiji is ideally situated in the South Pacific ocean in the southern hemisphere. With its tropical environment, Fiji offers fantastic tropical sunshine all year long. It lies on the 180 degrees Meridian where the dawning of each new day occurs. Approximately 330 islands make the Fiji group of islands, the total land area of approximately 18,272 square kilometers. Of the 330 islands, less than 100 islands are inhabited. The others remain as natural reserves
Area Covered
Latitude: 12 degrees-21 degreesS & Longitude: 176 degreesE-178 degreesW. The two major islands in the group are known as Viti Levu (the main island) and Vanua Levu (largest northern island). Almost 80 percent of the population live on these two islands. The majority of the population still live in rural areas and the outer islands. Only about 40 percent of the population live in urban areas.
Arrival & Departure Airports
Fiji has two international airports - Nadi, the principal international gateway into Fiji, and Nausori International Airport near Suva. From these airports, your will take a scenic 30-45 minute flight to Savusavu and Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa.
Customs & Baggage Handling
Fiji Customs operates a Dual Channel System - the RED and GREEN Channels - for expeditious clearance of air travellers. If you have any prohibited, restricted or commercial goods, or dutiable goods exceeding your duty/VAT free concessions, you must seek customs clearance, and proceed through the RED line. If you do not have any prohibited, restricted or commercial goods, or dutiable goods which exceed the allowable Duty/VAT concessions, you may proceed through the GREEN line.
Note
As may occur in any other country, your baggage may be examined by Fiji Customs authorities at any time. If they wish to check your baggage, you will be required to open and repack your baggage.
Dutiable Goods
Fiscal duty and VAT taxes are levied on all goods in excess of allowable concessions. Fiscal duty rates vary depending on the goods, whereas VAT is uniformly applied at the rate of 12.5%. VAT is applied on a base which includes the value of the goods plus any fiscal duty payable. However, there are also duty-free shops located within the international airport in Nadi. There you may buy goods duty-free when entering or leaving the country.
Communications
Most medium and large size hotels and resorts have direct dialling facilities. Before you make any long distance calls however, it is always a good idea to check with the resort receptionist or the long distance operator to determine what the long distance and international charges will be. These may also be found in the Fiji Telephone Directory.
Please note that the international country IDD code for Fiji is 679. There are no area codes within Fiji. Thus, when dialling any part of Fiji from overseas the procedure is: international access code from the country where you are calling from + (679) + local Fiji subscriber seven digit number.
